Supreme Court Chips Away At Fair Elections

Most of the discussion over the past week has been about the 5-4 Supreme Court decision against racial considerations in school choice. This was an important decision indeed, and my fellow bloggers have covered this topic extensively.

But another recent decision by the high court is also important- the decision to remove restrictions on special interest groups who want to pour money into political ads. This will encourage the Swiftboating of more candidates and will benefit powerful big money organizations and the politicians who they support. As such, the decision may undercut the power voters, shifting influence away from the ballot box, in the direction of big media, and big special interests groups.
