GMA's Robin Roberts Has Cancer

She made the announcement this morning.

I never thought I'd be writing this.
… I have breast cancer.

It all started a few weeks ago. We had gotten the news that our dear colleague and friend Joel Siegel had passed away and we began preparing for our special tribute show for him. I did a piece about Joel's courageous battle with cancer, reporting on the way my friend had lived his life and been such a successful advocate for the importance of early cancer screenings.

That very night when I went to bed, I did a self breast exam and found something that women everywhere fear: I found a lump.

At first I thought, "This can't be. I am a young, healthy woman." Nevertheless, I faced my fear head on and made an appointment to see the doctor. Much as I was hoping the doctor would say it was nothing, she did a biopsy and confirmed that the lump I'd found was indeed an early form of breast cancer.

Hearing the doctor say those words out loud was surreal.

I will be having surgery shortly and follow-up treatment in the months to come. So in the coming months, you will probably notice that I will have my good days and my bad days, but I know I will get through it with the love and support of my family and friends. Diane, Sam, Chris and all of the folks behind the scenes who make this program come to life each and every morning have been so supportive and loving at this challenging time.

To you, our viewers, please know that your thoughts and prayers very much sustain me as they always have each and every morning when I sit in the chair next to Diane and say "Good Morning America." You have always been there for me … and I love you back.

And like my good friend Joel, I can't stress enough how important it is to get screened and checked for all cancers — and to do self breast exams. I am so blessed that I found this in the early stages and the prognosis is so promising that my doctor expects me to be flying planes and hanging on to submarines in the middle of the Atlantic and scaling the Mayan Pyramids in no time in the mornings to come.

Now I join the ranks of millions of Americans who are fighting this same battle each and every day. I appreciate YOUR courage and YOUR example. Thank you for showing me the way.

I wish her the very best. It's a horrible disease, and early detection is the key. I will be sending her positive prayers.

FBI Searches U.S. Senator's Home

Well, well, well....

The rumors and smoke have been smoldering around him for years, but finally, it seems as if some action has been taken.

From CNN:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents searched the Alaska home of veteran Sen. Ted Stevens Monday amid a corruption probe that has already snared two oil-company executives and a state lobbyist.

Rest of the story is here.

I'm not too surprised. They have been investigating his son for awhile now, and they've been working their way up to him. Politically, I don't like Stevens, I admit that. And, if they can prove that he's crooked, then this is a strike for good government. The people should be able to trust the people that they elect to represent them.

Humble Genius Bill Walsh Dies of Leukemia

Bill Walsh
1931-2007

When it comes to coaching in the NFL, Bill Walsh was the best to ever do it. My favorite head coach by far. He led some of the greatest teams in pro football history, making it look easy as he went along.

His teams were the most disciplined, most professional, most powerful that I have ever seen...in ANY pro sport. And they had some of the best players on and off the field. The only coaches who come close in terms of class, professionalism, and execution, would be Pat Riley or Phil Jackson in the NBA.

Walsh changed the whole game of Football.... his teams would destroy opponents so bad that the league had to eventually switch to a different defensive posture, in order to match what these new offenses were doing. Of course he had help from the greatest QB & greatest receiver of all-time. For example, the man-to-man defense that was still popular in the 1970's & 80's, is rare today. That's because Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Steve Young, Roger Craig, John Taylor, Jerry Rice and others....would eat that defense up. Other teams began adopting the Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, West Coast style...and the game became much faster. Defenses had their hands full. As a result, various types of zone defenses are now the dominant defensive schemes in the game today, replacing the one on one. This is why blowouts are a lot less common today. Zone defenses compromise by giving up 5 or 10 yards per play, while reducing the opportunity for big plays....keeping more coverage down field. Teams also realized that they needed faster defensive backs & defenders with better hands, in order to keep up.

He also utilized everything on the Field... turning Tight Ends, Fullbacks, and Running Backs into primary receivers on certain plays....confusing defenses even more. To this day, I believe that Roger Craig is the greatest all-purpose running back in NFL history, although he never made it to the Hall of Fame (which is a travesty). There were better runners... there were better blocking backs, there were certainly backs who had more touchdowns...but none could do everything (block, catch, run, and even throw & lead) like Roger Craig. And few ran with the kind of energy and heart that Craig did... he shares that category with Jim Brown and Walter Payton. But this was part of Walsh's legacy. This kind of all-purpose Running Back is still in use in todays game with people like Edgerrin James, former Running Back Marshall Faulk and others.

I sort of lost interest in the game after Walsh, and his players left the scene. The NFL got boring after they left. lol. They set the bar so high that it was hard for other teams to ever reach it.... I have yet to see a coach or team execute with the kind of grace shown by the 80's-early90's 49ers. No team was more professional on or off the field. Watching them work was like watching poetry in motion.... that sounds like a cliche...but this is what it was really like for me. No other teams have even come close to what they did...the way they did it. Walsh brought the L.A. Lakers style "showtime" to the football field. I can recall several games when he would toy with opponents with his play calling. His unorthodox formations and strategy would confuse the Hell out of opposing coaches.

The NFL declined after Walsh left the stage.... at least for the fans IMO. Mainly because defenses have pretty much caught up to todays offenses as I mentioned, and because of the nonsense from many of today's players. The player culture has gone downhill. With all of the money being thrown around, players don't have much of an incentive to work hard, dedicate themselves to their craft, etc. The NFL has become one big giant party for players coming out of college... Players used to want to stay with teams to become a part of a family...and stick around in order to win the big game. Now the primary focus is on money. It is rare today for a solid core group of guys to stay together for 10 years or even 5 years. With all the big money and the trades... players are constantly shuffled from team to team. Few dynasties or fun rivalries can form today. And teams also have a hard time jelling into anything special....because players are not together long enough.

But Walsh left a huge legacy...with all the coaches (and people in general) who he influenced. His impact is immeasurable.

Interracial Couple Weds Despite Racist Threats

College football star Ian Johnson (who is Black) went ahead with his marriage to girlfriend Chrissy Popadics over the weekend, despite threats of violence. This is 2007 isn't it? And we are still seeing this kind of sick behavior. See another blog posting on this couple.

I am all for mixed race relationships. People should date and marry whoever they want. But it seems that this Country is still not ready to fully accept interracial marriage....not even dating. It is as if this is the last great taboo when it comes to race. When I dated interracially, I can't tell you how uncomfortable I was with the funny looks that my date and I got from people. I know Idaho has to be one of the least diverse States in the Country....so it was not exactly a shock to hear about the threats. But the situation is also bad in places like the St. Louis Metro (which has a very sizable Black population). It is one of the most segregated Metro areas in the nation. So I can empathize somewhat with this story...although I never got any death threats.

I often wonder how I would deal with this situation if it ever came up. I know I wouldn't back down. But constantly needing to look over my shoulder would eventually drive me mad.

Thoughts on Birthdays, Race, & Life. Why Can’t I Hit Rewind?

My birthday passed recently, placing me firmly in the mid-30’s category. This was the most depressing birthday yet…. I didn’t even bother acknowledging the day, hoping that by ignoring it, it would somehow not exist. After I hit age 28 or so and realized that my life had gone to $hit… every birthday since has been a pain in the ass. It’s a day that I pretty much dread every year. Because the day is just a reminder that I have not done anything with my life… and time was basically close to running out for any kind of last minute 9th inning effort to salvage it.

Back when I was 19 & 20, I had dreams & goals of having a great career, nice cars, a nice home, a wife and maybe even children by the time I reached my mid 30’s. But none of those things ever materialized. I’m like the poster boy for broken dreams.

I have a shitty job…that I hate getting up for every day. I drive a piece of shit 2001 Chrysler (I will never buy anything from Chrysler or any other American car company again). Home? Who can afford a home these days? Home ownership requires a certain minimum income, which I have not yet attained. I live in a shitty apartment in a lower middle class neighborhood (what used to be middle class) in St. Louis County. Wife????? I don’t even date… No career…and low cash flow means that I keep myself at home… in this society where relationships and dating are basically about financial status & is how women determine who gets their attention… I never saw the point in trying. And I hate nightclubs so much that I have never set foot in one (a fact that I pride myself on). So the wife thing is not even close to being in the picture. Children? Refer back to no career, which= no money, which = no nice car, which= no fancy house or condo, which= no woman (at least not the kind of women that I want). No money will almost always = no woman….and none of the social circles that you want either.

I have spent most of the past 10 years going to school….while slaving away at my bull---- job, chasing some dream of financial viability (ie. boyfriend/husband viability). But the harder I work, the more out of reach my dreams seem to be. The U.S. is becoming increasingly classist.. And it seems to be harder to get from the bottom to a higher level. It’s almost as if we have our own version of a caste system….where upward mobility is almost impossible.

Life is a bitch if you are poor or weren’t born into generational family wealth. I have always been annoyed by the rich guys for how easy they have it. There are definitely a lot of advantages that come with being born into privilege- advantages that help you later on down the line. Such as, coming out of college with little or no debt, being able to attend the Ivy League schools, landing the great career job, dating & marrying the person of your choice, the ability to buy a home while still young, etc. I, on the other hand, am saddled by $60,000 of student load debt, and I am about to pile on even more because I intend to return to school within the next year.

And being a Black man has only compounded the negatives. Being Black makes nearly everything harder. Whether it is career, dating, finances, etc. I am constantly thinking about what I would do if I could push a rewind button and start life all over again. I would have definitely gone to an Ivy League school (or I would have at least tried)…. I once believed that it didn’t matter what college you went to, as long as it was a good school. But I no longer believe that. In today’s competitive environment, you need every advantage you can get, and where you go to school does count. I wish I had known that 15 years ago. I would have also gotten a degree in something that I could have actually used. My degrees are completely useless. I might have also gone into a Trade. People who learn a Trade, make more money than a lot of college graduates. And I would have had less student debt if I had gone that route. So I would have chosen something more practical to go into.

I would have also chosen a career path earlier….thus eliminating most of the problems that I have now with everything else….such as the lack of money…and all that comes (or doesn’t come) behind it. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of going straight to college after High School. My father died and left nothing behind… (as black folks so often do) and I ended up having to work full time straight out of high school. In doing so, I lost 2-3 years of college time. When I finally did go to college, I was only able to study for one semester, and then I was out again for another 3 years because…. I had to work to support myself. My family was absent when it came to helping me. I had to work and get my own apartment, own transportation, etc. I was finally able to go to school while working full-time, but because of work…. I could only go sporadically and sometimes had to change my status to part-time, in order to keep things going. Some semesters I had to skip altogether. It took me 7 years to get a bachelors degree… and 2 for a graduate degree. 14 years passed between the time that I graduated from High School until my last year of college. This is the difference between growing up poor and growing up in privilege… People who come from privilege don’t have to burden themselves with actually working to get their next meal. They can concentrate on their studies….and graduate when they are supposed to, without losing so much precious time.

I also constantly think about how my life would have turned out if I grew up as a rich White kid. This is because I have never been comfortable in my own skin… in fact, I have always hated being in my own skin… probably since the time I was old enough to notice that I was different. But I wonder…how would my social life be different, how would dating be different, would my job search be more successful. I know there would definitely have been benefits in certain areas of life, just by virtue of having White skin. White privilege is pretty nice. Dating would have definitely been better. The white male is still the ideal preferred choice and will probably always be, for the greatest cross section of women. Why do I constantly see Asian women with White men? That’s no coincidence. The White male, to many women, is a symbol of financial security, etc. Even good Black women are turning to White men, because the image of Black men has been pretty much destroyed…. It has reached a point now where we are all assumed to be ignorant, oversexed, “dogs”, violent, deadbeats, you name it…anything negative is attached to the Black male image. Of course I know these images are not representative of all or probably not even most Black men, but most of the rest of society has not caught on.

It’s interesting that the few Black women who I have been interested in…turned out to be either already involved with White men, or I later found out that they had a preference for White men….and thus I had no chance. The image of the Black male has reached pariah status now…. Mostly at the hands of Black people…which is ironic. This is why (for the short time that I did date) I had so much difficulty. I don’t have a particular race preference…so the issue of interracial dating often came up. But the White women would see my ethnicity via my online profile, and would run for the Hills. Asian women were even more harsh. Most of the White and Asian women would tell me that their families would not approve of them dating a Black man. Black Women???? Well, it was hard finding any who I had anything in common with….or who I had any attraction to. And when I did… you can probably guess the result. They tended to prefer White men. The last woman I dated…(4 years ago) was Hispanic. But that didn’t work out because she was not what I was hoping for. She turned out to be damaged goods. She didn’t know what to do with a halfway decent guy. She was in her mid 20’s and she told me that I was the first man to ever bring her flowers. WTH? She spent a considerable amount of time on our dates talking about how bad she was treated (mistreated) by the thug of a boyfriend who she just left. It just said a lot about her tastes in men…and I decided that it wasn’t worth my time and effort to continue. Common among most women (and this was mostly from online dating) was that they expect a man to have reached a certain level financially. Basically I am locked out of the dating pool that I want to be in because of the lack of funds….which has always been the most important thing for a man in the dating scene.

Although I have accomplished little in my life so far… it is not too late to do something with the time I have left. The only thing that gets me up everyday is the possibility that something better could be just around the corner in terms of my finances and job prospects. Besides that, there would be no reason for me to wake up.

But this is the kind of thing that runs through my head a million times a day, especially on my birthday. They are so dreadful that the only thing I want to know is- can I make it stop and press rewind and start this thing all over again. And birthdays get worse as you get older… each year seems to be more dreadful than the previous one.

But maybe my fortunes (literally and figuratively) will change in the coming year.

BBC Documentary Provides A Glimpse Inside Iran

Former BBC Correspondent Rageh Omaar reports from inside Iran, in the documentary “Rageh Inside Iran”. See a summary of the documentary. See a full article about the film here. The film first aired earlier this year.

To provide some balance... I have also included another BBC Documentary on Iran. This documentary focuses on the execution of a 16 year old girl by the Iranian Government. The girl was Atefah Sahaaleh. The reason for the execution: "Crimes Against Chastity". The execution took place in August 2004. Read more about this story here.

Stories Of Rape, Indifference, and Justice Denied

Can you imagine living in a place where law & order has broken down? Can you imagine a place where you call 911, but it takes hours, days…and sometimes months for someone to respond to your cry for help? What about a place where women are routinely raped and receive little help or support; where rape cases often go uninvestigated?

It is common knowledge in this community that offenders are seldom pursued, making women and girls in this society even more vulnerable to rapists. Offenders are safe from justice due to government indifference and ineptitude.

This sounds like life for women in a war zone or in a Third World Country. But the place that I have described is not in Iraq, not in Afghanistan, not in Pakistan, not in South Asia, not in Eastern Europe, or in any other part of the World where women are not as valued as men. The place that I described is a hidden community within the borders of these United States. A Third World Country existing right here in the USA.

The U.S. prides itself on its human rights record & constantly scolds other nations on their human rights conditions. Yet, the U.S. is hiding the poor human rights conditions within its own borders. This is yet another example of why the U.S. is losing what little moral authority that it may have had around the world.

Human Rights Crisis Persists Within The Worlds Beacon For Justice

NPR reports on the hidden crisis of rape on the nations Indian Reservations. A state of lawlessness has been allowed to fester due to a lack of support and funding from the Federal government, under both Democratic and Republican Administrations.

This is an extension of the U.S.’s rape, abuse, and neglect of Native Americans that took place during the colonial period & during the nations 19th Century westward migration. These abuses continue by way of the U.S. governments indifference about the conditions within Native American lands. We are at least able to see the neglect of poor White communities, poor Black communities, poor Latino Communities, the mistreatment of migrant workers, etc. But we rarely see or hear much about what is happening in the hidden Native American Reservations within this country.

These are the first Americans…and they deserve better. Yet it is as if much of the rest of the Country doesn’t want to recognize their existence… it is almost as if they are invisible. After taking (stealing) their land, the U.S. government has done little to fulfill its promises to provide the very basic support that these communities need.

Furthermore, what is happening to the women in the Native American community is a far cry from what happens in White America. When a white woman or a child comes up missing, the World stops spinning and all available resources are put into finding them. When one is raped, police often make finding the perpetrator a top priority (as they should). But the U.S. often fails to apply this same standard to all women and children in the Country. We know that there is a difference in T.V. coverage between missing White Women and missing African American women…the same holds true for some other minorities as well.

If the story you are about to hear involved White women, there would be a national outcry, and more resources would be directed towards the problem. In fact, the problem would not have even been allowed to get as bad as it has for Native American women…if those women were White. I cannot imagine that the American people would stand for communities where predators had safe haven to rape women and children…...not if those women and children were White. But since the victims are Native American, it is somehow acceptable.

Listen to a 2 part report from NPR’s Laura Sullivan, about the crisis of rape and lawlessness on Native American Reservations. Thanks to NPR for shining some light on this situation. We would most likely not have heard of such a story from the mainstream media.

It was NPR’s excellent coverage that caused one of the cases in the report to be reopened.

Lauryn Hill - Something is not right

Remember Lauryn Hill. Our Sweet Princess. The woman who when she walked into a room commanded respect. Well it does not appear that all is not going well for her.

This can't be my girl Lauryn Hill. What's going on with our Black women? are Black Girls, What about our daughters?

Why is Lauryn Hill Still Acting out? Is Lauryn Hill the new WhitneyHouston (without Bobby)? Can anyone reach out to this sister? Why am I asking this? Read more and view the pictures below. Come back and let us know what you think.

laurynwater.jpg

According to sources at Lauryn Hill's Norway concert this weekend, her crazy demands are even more out of control. apparently she demanded that all her security guards be black, none of them could look at her--even from backstage, no one around her could speak to her unless she speaks to them first, and no one could walk past her backstage. Chick clearly has some issues.

OK, there is more. The Reviews are not good. One reviewer writing about the Lauryn Hill show in Oakland said it was a fiasco. Jim Harrington of MediaNews writes, "It use to be easy to be a fan of Lauryn Hill, back when she was making some of the most important and successful albums of the '90s and winning record numbers of Grammy Awards. It's gotten much more difficult in recent years, as the diva has hidden herself from the public, appearing out just enough to still give Courtney Love a run for the money in the wacko pop star race." Lauryn Hill Flops Live

lauryn hill, the fugees

The former Fugee messes up gigs stateside before she heads to the UK…

Lauryn Hill has left fans in the US disappointed after recent live shows.

According to reports around 100 concert-goers quit her gig in Oakland early and demanded refunds from organisers. The former member of The Fugees arrived on stage late and then performed unrecognisable versions of her classic hits with a croaky voice that was barely heard above the backing band. More HERE

Now these pictures:

Can anyone reach out to this sister? Help save this princess. She is screaming for help!

Harvard Study Finds Racial Bias Among Doctors

Could This Help To Explain Some Of the Racial Disparities in Heathcare?

I think this could be a contributing factor, but this does not deal with all of the disparities. This study only covers treatment once a patient is able to see a doctor. It doesn't deal with many of the other disparities impacting healthcare, such as access, cost of medicine, health insurance or lack thereof, economic status, etc.

The researchers seemed to go out of their way not to call this racism, but instead... an unintentional or "unconscious" bias. A 2005 study didn't try to use such sugar coated language, referring to the problem as entrenched unconcious racism. It may be true that most of this is unintentional...but I would say that it stems from an institutional racism of sorts, that planted the seeds in the minds of some of these doctors that trained them (perhaps unconsciously) to accept the idea that a Black life may not be as valuable as those of other races.

Regardless of what they call it... there is now more and more evidence that it is there... so they can't say it is being made up or is all in our heads. Many black folks don't need any convincing from a study... they have first hand experience with this two-track healthcare system. However, such studies are still useful in bringing the problem to the attention of the wider public.

Other reports and studies have pointed out numerous disparities in healthcare, but it was only within the last few years that these efforts have sparked a wider interest in the medical community.

As more studies come out, perhaps good public policy can now be developed to begin to deal with the problem.

Report below from United Press International

By ADRIANNE APPEL
UPI Correspondent

BOSTON, July 20 (UPI) -- Young doctors may harbor implicit racial biases, and this gets in the way of African-Americans receiving care equal to that of whites, a Harvard University study reported this week.

It has been well documented that there is a gap in the healthcare treatment African-Americans receive, especially in emergency rooms, according to the study authors.

A number of studies have shown that whites are twice as likely as blacks to receive full treatment for heart attacks in the emergency room, according to the study, available at the Web site of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The Harvard study and a handful of others in recent years are attempting to zero in on whether inherent racial bias on the part of the provider is a factor, and how this may play out, said Dana Carney, a postdoctoral fellow in the psychology department at Harvard.

The Harvard study examined the conscious and unconscious attitudes of 220 interns -- almost all of whom were white -- toward white and black patients.

The study found that most of the physicians, whether white, Asian or Latino, tended to harbor biases against black patients and that this resulted in the patients receiving less thorough treatment, Carney said.

Just six of the interns were black, and while they expressed less bias against black patients, in some, it was there, Carney said. The reason is broad stereotypes propagated by the media and society in general, she said.

"It's the culture's thumbprint on our mind," Carney told United Press International.

"The problem is they can influence judgment and behavior in ways we don't want them to," Carney said.

In the study, 220 interns from four institutions in Atlanta and Boston took a computerized survey that asked them to show how they would treat a 50-year-old man who came into the emergency room with chest pain, a potential heart attack.

The interns were randomly assigned to either a black patient or a white patient.

The interns who were assigned to a black patient and who expressed unconscious bias against black patients tended to give them less care for a heart attack.

The more bias they expressed, the less treatment they would tend to give to the black patient.

Those interns who were biased against black patients would tend to give more treatment to white patients, the study found.

Further, the results found a tendency on the part of the interns to view black patients as uncooperative in general and in terms of agreeing to treatment recommendations.

The study checked for conscious bias against black patients by asking the interns to rank whether they preferred black or white patients and how much. Very few physicians expressed open bias against black patients.

Nelson Adams, the president-elect of the National Medical Association, which represents African-American physicians, said biases that result in less care for African-Americans is a problem that has serious consequences for the African-American community and the nation.

"It is my belief and the association's position that some of these biases are contributing to the continued gaps we see in the health status of citizens in this country. Though we know education is crucial in alleviating most ills, without adequate resources very little will take place," said Nelson, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Jackson North Hospital in Miami.

"The NMA has also been clear in stating that something ought to be done," he said.

Broad, systemic changes are needed to root out the bias that still exists in the United States against many groups, Nelson said.

"One thing that is crystal clear among the medical community is the whole notion of human beings being human beings. We have so much in common, the differences are minuscule," he said.

"We ought to be clearly aware that bias in healthcare occurs in providers but that it happens at all levels -- at the individual level, the provider level and the institutional level. All need to be addressed, and not just one," he said.

One factor that would help on a number of different levels is for medical schools to recruit more black students to become doctors. Last year there were just 100 black medical students in school, excluding those at historically black colleges, he said.

"We do have ways to make people less biased," John Dovidio, a Yale University psychologist, told UPI. High on the list are training and classes.

What would help in the physician community is a requirement that they receive such training after they leave medical school. Physicians are required to take a certain number of courses during their careers, usually focused on new treatments. They should also take courses on cultural sensitivity, communication and race, Dovidio said.

For example, studies show that communication needs to be improved between white physicians and black patients. Dovidio also believes that black patients bring their inherent biases and stereotypes with them as well.

"Whites have a very different impression of how the interaction went. Blacks tend to believe that it went less well. Whites tend to think it went well, and that blacks thought it went well," Dovidio said.

Still, it isn't as if the training is easy and that everyone is very open to the idea that they may hold unconscious biases, he said.

"People go into medicine because they are good people. If you try to bring the message that they aren't as good as they think, it's a hard message to bring," he said.

"These issues still don't get the kind of importance that a new drug or treatment would get. People aren't bad people, they are busy. The effects of bias are more subtle, more long term. Other issues are more immediate. This takes a back seat," Dovidio said.

Update on the Jena Six

Jena 6 Student Released on $100,00 Bail

And there are new developments in the case of the Jena Six -- the black high school students in Louisiana charged with attempted murder for a school fight in which a white student was beaten up. On Monday, Jena Six member Theo Shaw was finally released on more than $100,000 bail.

Sentencing Delayed for Lone Jailed Jena 6 Student

The only member of the Jena 6 now in prison is Mychall Bell, the first of the Jena Six to go on trial. He was convicted by an all-white jury of aggravated battery and conspiracy. On Tuesday, a judge delayed Bell’s sentencing from later this month to September 20th. Bell faces up to twenty-two years in prison.

Subpoena Issued To Karl Rove

The Senate Judiciary Committee Has Now Issued A Subpoena for Chief White House strategist Karl Rove. The White House is finally beginning to catch hell from the new Congress. A full scale political war may be about to start. The current situation in Washington D.C. is similar to the climate during Iran-Contra, and Vietnam.

I predict that the Federal Courts will strike some sort of compromise...by requiring Rove, Miers, Bolten (and others) to actually respond to the subpoenas and appear before Congress to answer most of the questions they will be asked... but may allow the witnesses not to speak about certain "sensitive" matters via the 5th amendment.

I am interested in seeing just how far Congress will be able to go

Leahy issues subpoena for Rove

By Klaus Marre
July 26, 2007

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) Thursday issued a subpoena for top White House adviser Karl Rove to compel him to testify about the firing of several U.S. attorneys.

“The evidence shows that senior White House political operatives were focused on the political impact of federal prosecutions and whether federal prosecutors were doing enough to bring partisan voter fraud and corruption cases,” Leahy said. “It is obvious that the reasons given for the firings of these prosecutors were contrived as part of a cover-up and that the stonewalling by the White House is part and parcel of that same effort.”

Leahy issued the subpoenas, one to Rove and one to White House aide Scott Jennings, after consulting with Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.), the committee’s ranking member.

“The Bush-Cheney White House continues to place great strains on our constitutional system of checks and balances,” Leahy added. “Not since the darkest days of the Nixon administration have we seen efforts to corrupt federal law enforcement for partisan political gain and such efforts to avoid accountability.”

The move is a further escalation of the constitutional battle between Congress and the White House over whether Bush administration officials must provide testimony and documents to legislative branch investigators.

Leahy said he is not taking this step lightly and only decided to proceed after “[exhausting] every avenue seeking the voluntary cooperation of Karl Rove and J. Scott Jennings.”

The Judiciary Committee chairman concluded that the investigation has “reached a point where the accumulated evidence shows that political considerations factored into the unprecedented firing of at least nine United States attorneys last year.”

In a letter to Rove, Leahy gives the White House official a week to appear before the panel and testify under oath.

“I hope that the White House takes this opportunity to reconsider its blanket claim of executive privilege, especially in light of the testimony that the President was not involved in the dismissals of these U.S. Attorneys,” Leahy said in his letter. “I am left to ask what the White House is so intent on hiding that it cannot even identify the documents, the dates, the authors and recipients that they claim are privileged.”

I Thought All Injustice Was SUPPOSED To Be Equal

But, I've never seen a Wrongly Accused Black Man get paid like this, have you?

Read on:

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- A federal judge Thursday ordered the government to pay more than $101 million in the case of four men who spent decades in prison for a 1965 murder they didn't commit after the FBI withheld evidence of their innocence.

The FBI encouraged perjury, helped frame the four men and withheld for more than three decades information that could have cleared them, U.S. District Judge Nancy Gertner said in issuing her ruling Thursday.

The rest of the story is here.

I know what happened to these men is horrible. Being framed for a crime you didn't commit ranks right up there on the list of truly horrible things that can happen to you. I'm just saying that I look out for these stories, and I've never seen a mistreated Black man get THIS kind of restitution from the government.

Once again we see that ALL Injustice isn't ' equal'.

War Veterans Sue Government Over Lack Of Medical Care

Veterans groups have filed a class-action lawsuit against several Federal agencies due to lack of medical care or, in some cases, the refusal to provide care for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

What happened to taking care of the troops???????

Interesting that right around the time of the lawsuit..... Bush's panel on Veterans health recommends improvements in the care of injured soldiers (improvements that should have been made years ago).

House Judiciary Committee Issues Contempt Citations Against Former White House Aides

The House Judiciary Committee has issued contempt citations against two former members of the Bush Administration for refusing to respond to subpoenas requiring them to attend hearings. The targets of the citations are former White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers. The Committee vote was 22-17 in favor of the citations and fell along Party lines.

It has been many years since such high ranking political figures have been held in contempt by the U.S. Congress. The citations still require the backing of a full vote in the House of Representatives.

This will almost certainly end up in Federal Court, and will be a Constitutional battle. Why? Because the contempt citations have to be enforced by a U.S. attorney. And since the U.S. attorneys are controlled by the Bush administration, the citations will go nowhere. This obstacle will require the Congress to petition the Federal Courts.

This may be the first major battle between the Congress and the Bush administration since Democrats took control earlier this year.

Candidates for Mother of the Year 2007

I heard about this story in passing on the radio and decided that I wanted to know more about it, so I Googled it. Lo and behold, I got not one, but TWO stories of this vein.

Candidate One for Mother of the Year 2007:

May I introduce to you Michelle Wright.

Ms. Wright, age 37, has just been charged with firearms charges after she allegedly DROVE HER SON'S FRIENDS TO A RIVAL GANG MEMBER'S HOUSE FOR A SHOOTING.

Your eyes did NOT deceive you...she drove her son TO A SHOOTING.

Luckily for her and her thug son and his associates, NOBODY was killed in the process.

While there are plenty of interesting things in the story, here's the money quote for me:

Several hours after the shooting, detectives acting on a tip went to an abandoned house where they arrested her son and the gunman, Gillis said. Authorities also recovered a shotgun they suspect was used in the shooting, he said.

During the arrest, Wright showed up and accused the officers of harassing her children, officials said.

Yes, the PO-Lice were ' picking on' her son and his friends.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm way too naive, but the idea of someone, around my age, actually driving their child TO A SHOOTING is just absolutely horrific to me. But, maybe I'm ' out of the mainstream' of thinking, and someone can explain to me why I shouldn't be horrified.

Now rikyrah, you said that you had TWO candidates for mother of the year...you mean that there's someone worse than Ms. Wright?

Damn skippy. THIS is the person that I was looking for when I originally did the Google search.

Candidate Number 2 for Mother of the Year 2007:

May I introduce to you Eva Daley.

It is alleged that Ms. Daley, 30, drove her 14-year-old son and six other members of the Latin Marijuana Smokers gang TO A SKATE PARK TO KILL A 13-YEAR-OLD BOY THEY HAD A GRUDGE AGAINST,police say. The boy, Jose "Bobby" Cano, WAS STABBED TO DEATH.

Just exactly how does this conversation go?

You're sitting in your living room watching tv when your FOURTEEN YEAR OLD SON comes in, and says,

' Mama, I gotta go kill someone, but me and my boys need a ride. Will you give us one?'

' Sure, Baby, just give me a minute to get my shoes on and face fixed.'

There just are no words that can describe my sense of confusion, disgust and horror at reading these stories. How does one even begin to explain this?

Just as there are men that are nothing but Sperm Donors, these women are what I call Egg Donors. Nothing more.

Alberto Gonzales Testifies For Senate Judiciary Committee

(Watch Yesterdays Hearing Below)

Alberto Gonzales was once again dragged before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday for questioning. This time, the focus was not only on the U.S. attorney firings (and the possible coaching of a witness) but also the issue of domestic spying, and the White House's refusal to cooperate with ongoing Congressional investigations.

Members of Congress are now considering calling for a Special Prosecutor to investigate Gonzales and his tenure at the Justice Department. Sen. Arlen Spector mentioned that Alberto Gonzales has the power to appoint a Special Prosecutor...to lead an investigation of guess who?... Alberto Gonzales. Of course this would be a complete joke. That's like the burglar investigating his own crime. I don't think that would go very far. He mentioned that since Gonzales has a conflict of interest, the President could appoint a Special Prosecutor....but obviously there would still be a conflict of interest.

This is why the Justice Department should be more independent from the politics of the White House and more accountable to the Congress.

The First Youtube Debate - Best Format So Far

I usually don't care for the format of political debates, but I thoroughly enjoyed yesterdays Youtube debate format.

This was a testament of the impact that ordinary people can have on the political process, if given the opportunity. I hate these political pundits over analyzing debates and telling us how to think. I also hate the restrictions of the typical debate and the lack of flexibility on the part of the moderators. Yesterdays debate was more open.

When the public is able to participate in these debates, the questions and answers tend to be more interesting. Of course the debate was not perfect, but it was a step up from all the other debates so far. Of course the networks decide which questions get asked... that's one big drawback.

I would prefer to see Town Hall style debates, where members of the public get to ask the questions directly to the candidates, and where viewers could follow along online and ask questions via e-mail or message board. I would have also liked to see a presence of more alternative candidates...But I guess I shouldn't expect too much. It will be interesting to see how hard Republicans and Democrats work to keep alternative candidates out of the debates once the Primary season is over. But as of right now, I guess I will have to be happy with whatever remnants of Democracy that I can get.

Anderson Cooper hardly allowed Mike Gravel any time to speak. Nevertheless... It was great having Mike Gravel on one end and Dennis "The Menace" Kucinich on the other...giving these big money (Corporate Owned) special interests candidates all kinds of Hell. They were perfect bookends for the debate.

And Hillary Clinton continued to lie about pulling troops from Iraq. No one called her on her lies. I will be back on Daily Kos soon, screaming about it again. Will Democrats challenge her on this issue? I doubt it.... because she is their super star candidate and she can do no wrong in the eyes of many Democrats. She was also wrong on the issue of international diplomacy. I heard a lot of "Business as Usual" from Hillary, and many of the other Democrats. U.S. foreign policy is one area where the Democrats and the Republicans are not too far apart. Both parties = the War party. This is how we end up the Democrats competing with each other and with Republicans in a contest to see who could be the toughest, biggest pro-war candidate. We may as well have one political party in this country...because this is essentially what we already have in terms of foreign policy.

Kucinich and Obama were the only candidates who offered any inkling of a decent foreign policy. But Kucinich certainly has no chance of winning.... and in the end, I don't think that voters will give Obama the Democratic Party nomination. So we are left with at least 15 pro-war candidates (both Republican and Democrat).

This country won't see anything resembling Democracy until more political parties (viable ones) are able to emerge....which they are unable to do right now. It takes money and a lot of grassroots power for that to happen, and few Americans are even thinking of that possibility. There is no effort to challenge either party. Most Americans are stuck in the 2 Party mindset. It's almost as if they have been indoctrinated to only accept a 2 Party system. This means that we will be stuck with the 2 Party dictatorship for years to come.

Until the day comes when more Political Parties have a real seat at the table, and when big money plays less of a part in the process... I will continue to be a non-voter. It is a pointless exercise to vote in a system that is inherently antithetical to Democracy. Anyone participating in the current voting system ironically becomes part of the act... part of the delusion that a real Democracy exists. It's like voting in Iran or Pakistan (fake ceremonial Democracy).

Hell... Iraq is ironically more of a Democracy than the U.S. in terms of its political structure, the voting process, and the diversity of voices at the table. We have troops dying for that system (where there are dozens of political parties), yet there is no real Democracy here at home for the U.S. soldier when he returns. The irony is unbelievable.

I envy the systems of Canada and Europe...where Democracy is still alive. Most of the governments in Europe are much more accountable and responsive to the needs and concerns of their people. This is due to how their governments are set up. Politicians in Europe (generally speaking) get sent home for not taking care of business. On the contrary, politicians in the U.S. system not only remain safely in their positions, but are easily re-elected after they mess up.

But the Youtube debates are a baby step in the right direction-- getting back to the man on the street... bringing politicians closer to the people in a country where they have been more and more distant from the average American.

I hope that the Youtube format or an even better Open Town Hall format catches on and becomes a normal part of each campaign season.

The Loss of Local Flavor in Black Radio

The Washington Post did a good article the other day:

'Talk,' in the Past Tense: Why There Are No More Petey Greenes on Local Radio

The article's beginning point is the late Activist/Disc Jockey known as Petey Greene. His rise on Black Talk Radio has been shown in the film Talk To Me, with Don Cheadle in the starring role. The movie is wonderful in showing how Mr. Greene took his talent in connecting with the people and used it in a positive way to benefit the community.

This article was brought home to me from personnel changes in my own hometown. A DJ that had been here for years, who, in the Number THREE Market in the country, during the MORNING DRIVE, had achieved a NUMBER THREE RATING - was just FIRED.

Fired.

And replaced by whom?

Steve Harvey.

Was Harvey in the Top 10 of ratings for the Morning Drive in my city?

No.

Was Harvey in the Top 10 of ratings for the Morning Drive in my city?

No.

What was Havey's rating in the Morning Drive in my city?

28.

That's right, I said TWENTY-EIGHT.

They replaced a man who had achieved a NUMBER THREE rating in that timeslot with someone who was TWENTY-EIGHT.

In this rush for media consolidation, one of the casualties of this is the loss of local flavor on the radio. Of the DJ who is part entertainer, part activist who took on local issues and rallied the community. In its place is a syndicated talk show talking in generic terms, taking away the focus from the local grassroots.

So, what's the gameplan? That the local DJ who earned the ratings, what, just got them because of the station? That it had nothing to do with HIS talent or what he brought to the table? That you can just put in 'Any Black Man', and they'll get the same ratings? That's just offensive. We're losing the flavor and the foundation for the fight on the airwaves.

The Black Community and Herpes

I am, by nature, skeptical of Big Pharma. I always look beyond the obvious when they say something, because I naturally believe that they are up to no good at the expense of the little person.

I came upon this article about the debate among some in the Black community about a new advertising campaign aimed at Blacks by GlaxoSmithKline to educate the community about the risks of herpes.

Yes, I know that they are all about making money and selling their drug, but facts are facts: Black people suffer from herpes at a rate far higher than White people. And, we are at a further disadvantage as a community because so many of our people do not know that they are infected.

Here is the possible controversy:

Some experts worry that the campaign may lead to widespread testing and large-scale treatment of people who do not have symptoms -- a strategy not recommended by federal health authorities. Even Glaxo's supporters think the effort is likely to be controversial.

So, there's the other side. Do we want widespread testing in the Black community? What will happen with this possible database? Are some people who are NOT positive going to be treated for it anyway, meaning they'll be given a drug that they don't need? I understand the legacy of medical apartheid when it comes to the Black community, but I do wonder sometimes if our own skepticism now hurts us with regards to getting needed treatment? And, how do we get treatment if we don't get tested?

The stats on Blacks and Herpes:

A federal survey in the early 1990s found that 21 percent of American adults had the infection. Among blacks, the rate was 48 percent. A follow-up survey this decade found that the national prevalence had fallen to 17 percent, but in blacks it had not gone down significantly.

In about 40 percent of newly infected people, the virus causes painful, pimple-like sores on the genitals. Although they eventually go away even without treatment, they can reappear every few months. In most people, recurrences are less frequent as time passes. In the survey, only one in 10 people who tested positive knew they were infected. A person without symptoms can transmit the virus to a sexual partner.

So, how can we begin to fight the disease if 90% of the people who have it don't know it? I don't know the answer, but thought the article was worth the read.

The Possible NBA Referee Scandal

Remember this name: Tim Donaghy

Don't know it? Not surprised, but I have a feeling you will before it's all said and done.

Mr. was a Referee with the National Basketball Association. And, he's been accused of gambling on NBA games, and FIXING games in which he refereed.

This is BIG TIME, folks. This story has it all: sports, money, gambling, THE MOB. It's just itching for a Movie-Of-The-Week treatment.

NBA Commissioner David Stern came out today that Mr. Donaghy was the ONLY Referee involved in fixing games. While that might be true, Mr. Donaghy has just retained the services of a lawyer known for representing WHISTLEBLOWERS, and the FBI is very interested in what Mr. Donaghy has to say.

As a fan, there is little, in this jaded, overexposed era in sports that people cling to, but I do believe fair officiating is one of those things. Oh, you might believe while watching that a certain call didn't go the way for your team, but as my father told me, ' you get some calls one night, and then other nights, the other team gets them. It all balances out. '

But, in Mr. Donaghy's case, it didn't all balance out. It didn't balance out at all. THE FIX WAS IN.

I don't know whether to hope that it's true and Mr. Donaghy IS the only one....or, to wish for him being the tip of the iceberg. There are so many critters under the rocks of professional sports; I would love for them to begin crawling out- one by one.

Barry Bonds and Hank Aaron

Sports Illustrated has a good article about Hank Aaron and his response to Bonds breaking his record. I thought it was going to be a Bonds bash, but it wasn't. It was more about Hank Aaron and his inner character, and why he's not going to be anywhere near Barry Bonds when he breaks his record.

For the record, I always respected Barry Bonds. Never liked him, but I always respected him. I loved his ' Kiss My Black Ass' attitude, BECAUSE.....

He had the game to back up the attitude.

But, that kind of attitude comes with a downside. For the record, I believe the overwhelming majority of sports writers are frustrated White guys who never got to live out their own sports dreams, so they've decided to leech onto sports anyway they can. Now, I will say this, they are resentful of' White athletes too that they feel don't deserve it - Ted Williams and Roger Maris come to mind, but I believe they resent the hell out of these young Black men making more money in a month than they'll see in 2 years, and they search out ways to make these young Black athletes look bad.

So, when a Barry Bonds comes along and tells them repeatedly to Kiss His Black Ass, they DOUBLY resent it. They sit there, seething, just waiting for the opportunity to strike back at Bonds, and when given said opportunity, they pounce on it like vultures.

Let's get these facts out of the way.

1. The period in which Bonds is ' suspected' of steroid use, it was LEGAL. Completely LEGAL with regards to the rules of Major League Baseball.
2. Like the rumor swirling Lance Armstrong, Barry Bonds has passed EVERY SINGLE TEST given to him. Period.

Do I believe that Bonds used steroids? Let's just say that I'll give him the benefit of the doubt right up until he fails his first drug test. But, I'll always be mad at him, because HE HAD THE PHYSICAL CHOPS ALREADY.

He was already going to be DA MAN, and could have had all these records - WITH his attitude, but WITHOUT the taint.

As for Hank Aaron, it's a generational clash between him and Barry Bonds. Hank Aaron went through literal hell for THREE YEARS leading up to his breaking Babe Ruth's Home Run Record. I mean death threats kind of hell. The press might be vicious against Barry Bonds, but as far as I know, no FBI agents have been assigned to him under threats of death. Hank Aaron is Old School. Like Jackie Robinson and other athletes from those days, their political lives, and commitment to the community went hand in hand with their talents on the athletic field. They were another era in which they knew when they stepped upon the field that their actions would reflect not only upon themselves, but the community. Aaron knows that isn't the case with athletes these days, but he shouldn't be chastised or condemned for his CHOICE as to not be there when Bonds breaks his record. Why SHOULD he put even tacit approval towards Bonds, when he has this cloud around him? Why should this Old School Aaron support Hip Hop Bonds? Aaron knows that it's a 'new day', but he has earned the right to live out the rest of his life by HIS own principles.

I will be glad when Bonds breaks his record, but I'll always be disgusted that Bonds let himself be caught up in mess like this, tainting what could have been HIS moment, free and clear.

A Victory In The Fight Against BET

Bloggers, Activists, & Civil Rights Groups Get BET To Back Down

Press Release Below

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BET's "Hot Ghetto Mess" is Hot Ghetto Gone!: Network Changes Name to "We Got to Do Better."

Austin, TX - July 23, 2007- After battling widespread public outrage over its intent to air a show, " Hot Ghetto Mess," on July 25th, BET has relented and changed the name from "Hot Ghetto Mess" to "We Got to Do Better." It wasn't all that she was hoping for, but Gina McCauley, creator of the blog What About Our Daughters?, is reserving judgment until the show airs.

"On Friday a third-party called me and said that BET was reeling and didn't know what to do. That was when I gave them several alternatives. I suggested that they either release the show directly to DVD or they could change the name."

McCauley's largest concern with the television show " Hot Ghetto Mess" was that it was tied directly to the website of the same name.

"The website is indefensible. For BET to be so arrogant to think that they were going to get away with promoting and promulgating something as abominable as HotGhettoMess.com, they had to be complete total idiots" said McCauley.

"My position has always been that people who want to watch foolishness should pay for it. I will not purchase the products, goods and services of a company that advertises on something called "Hot Ghetto Mess."

Although she doesn't think BET can pull off social commentary, McCauley is waiting until she sees the show when it premiers on Wednesday.

However, McCauley is warning advertisers willing to risk sponsoring on the show, whatever the name. " We fully intend to hold the advertisers accountable for every photo, video or joke appearing on 'We Got to Do Better.'

BET.com reflects the name change which apparently was done so quickly that whoever edited the show description to replace HGM with WGTDB failed to delete an "H" and one of the revisions reads HWGTDB.

Romney Joins Other Bigots In Attacking Obama

Mitt Romney is seen not only standing behind the sign with a supporter, but he is also seen holding the sign himself.

Hat Tip: Talking Points Memo

Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney joins other bigots to attack Barack Obama. Once again, the Republicans are associating Obama's name with a major international terrorist and essentially with Al Qaeda. Fox News started this nonsense (associating Obama with Bin Laden) a few months ago. Now the ignorance is spreading.

I knew that Obama would have to deal with these kinds of ignorant attacks, and that the Conservative media would participate, but I did not expect it to be so vicious, so early....and so obvious. I thought that it would be a little more nuanced. But the Republicans apparently have little shame about what they are doing.

This is just the latest in a string of bigoted incidents involving Republican politicians. More recently (late last year) there was the attack on Congressman Keith Ellison because he is Muslim...(with the ignorant White Congressman assuming Ellison was an immigrant due to his religion). And just a few days ago, a Hindu priest, a guest of the U.S. Senate, was heckled as he gave the official opening prayer. This kind of ignorance just never seems to end.

Do Republicans realize how stupid they look when they engage in the kind of behavior shown above?

(Notice how "Mama" is misspelled)

What Are The Russians Planning?

Russian Bombers Enter British Airspace

Britain and Norway scrambled jets over the weekend to intercept Russian bombers crossing into NATO territory.

Report

Russia and the West did quite a bit of probing and intercepting..... during the Cold War. It was pretty much routine. But this dropped off after the Soviet Union broke apart. However, this activity has been increasing since Putin came to power in 2000, and has increased even more in the past couple of years. Russian bombers are now routinely intercepted near Iceland, headed for North America, and near Alaska and the Northwest U.S. Coast.

It is clear that Russia wants to revive old Cold War tensions (I believe the Cold War never really ended in the first place). And the pro-war crazies who run this country are eager to oblige Russia and fulfill their wish. Because this also seems to be what the U.S. Neo-con elites want as well. Afterall.... these tensions are good for the Defense Industry, and good in terms of how well these companies do on the stock market. If the U.S. can convince Europe and other parts of the world that Russia is still a threat, then the U.S. Defense Industry can sell more weaponry. A good deal for the rich elites, but bad for the rest of us.

What we basically have are two governments run by crazies who are armed with nuclear weapons. The problem with these kinds of games, is that they raise the risk of a miscalculation or miscommunication of some sort....and one thing could quickly lead to another and before we know it, there could be an international crisis. I am hoping that the next U.S. President (regardless of which war Party they are from) can restore normal relations with other major powers in the World, especially with Russia.

Dubai Tower Now Worlds Tallest Building

The Burj Dubai (Tower Dubai) is now the tallest building in the world, according the the developer.

I have always been interested in skyscrapers, and this building is just unbelievable. I can't wait to see a documentary on how they put this thing together. I guess you could call me a skyscraper-phile.

The rest of the World has finally caught up to the U.S. in terms of massive architectual projects. Definitely a sign of the times.

The Power of Black Bloggers

Hot Ghetto Mess

Black bloggers have united against BET and Viacom and are gaining traction. Now one of the nations leading newspapers The Washington post is following black blogger conversations on the issue.

My Photo

African American Political Pundit says:
I agree with you Gina McCauley, creator of the blog What About Our Daughters?, "This is the POWER of Black bloggers in action. How many more of you need to be convinced that this is a new day in blogging activism in the African American community?"

-------

As Bloggers such as
Gina McCauley, creator of the blog What About Our Daughters?,
Electronic village, the Afrosphere,
Mirror on America, Bronze trinity, African American Political Pundit and hundreds of other black bloggers step up the effort to stop negative portrayals of blacks by the media, a recent media release provides more details:

Black Bloggers and Civil Rights Groups Unite to Topple BET's "Hot Ghetto Mess"

Austin, TX -July 19, 2007 - If Viacom's Black Entertainment Television goes through with its plans to air "Hot Ghetto Mess" next week, many people will be watching, but not for the reason BET wants. Realizing that mere online advocacy, was not going to be enough to topple "Hot Ghetto Mess" after she'd gotten advertisers to flee the show, Gina McCauley, creator of the blog What About Our Daughters? turned to a coalition of religious and women's groups including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, National Organization for Women, Rainbow PUSH, and the National Congress of Black Women.

The result is what may very well be the largest intergenerational collaboration between young online activists and their older offline counterparts in United States history. Their focus; to convince advertisers that buying ad time on BET's "Hot Ghetto Mess" just isn't worth it, despite the high ratings that the show is likely to bring if it airs.

On July 25, 2007, "Hot Ghetto Mess" watch parties are being scheduled in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Austin, the District of Columbia and the list of locations keeps growing. Those attending the watch parties will be recording which companies purchase advertisements during the show. The coalition then plans to target those businesses with possible boycotts or demonstrations.

Help Hunt Down Hot Ghetto Mess

Hat Tip: Villager

Villagers, it is time to send the hunters into the jungle to bring down the jackal that has been stealing our dignity. The Electronic Village is joining What About Our Daughters blog, Eddie Griffin and other Black bloggers in the next phase of this quest to take Hot Ghetto Mess off the air.

Hot Ghetto' Leaves Some Blacks Cold

Ever since she started pumping her friends' snapshots of black people behaving badly onto her Web site, Jam Donaldson has been at the center of an uncomfortable cultural question:

Can African Americans publicly humiliate, satirize and otherwise shame other African Americans and not be called "race haters," "elitists" and "Uncle Toms"? More HERE

From Hurricane Katrina To Hurricane FEMA

Formaldehyde in FEMA Trailers Making Occupants Sick - FEMA Leadership Fails To Respond

Yet Another Scandal Unfolds

Watch Video of Congressional Hearing Below

By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer

The Federal Emergency Management Agency since early 2006 has suppressed warnings from its own field workers about health problems experienced by hurricane victims living in government-provided trailers with levels of a toxic chemical 75 times the recommended maximum for U.S. workers, congressional lawmakers said yesterday.

A trail of e-mails obtained by investigators shows that the agency's lawyers rejected a proposal for systematic testing of the levels of potentially cancer-causing formaldehyde gas in the trailers, out of concern that the agency would be legally liable for any hazards or health problems. As many as 120,000 families displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita lived in the suspect trailers, and hundreds have complained of ill effects.

On June 16, 2006, three months after reports of the hazards surfaced and a month after a trailer resident sued the agency, a FEMA logistics expert wrote that the agency's Office of General Counsel "has advised that we do not do testing, which would imply FEMA's ownership of this issue." A FEMA lawyer, Patrick Preston, wrote on June 15: "Do not initiate any testing until we give the OK. . . . Once you get results and should they indicate some problem, the clock is running on our duty to respond to them."

FEMA tested no occupied trailers after March 2006, when it initially discovered formaldehyde levels at 75 times the U.S.-recommended workplace safety threshold and relocated a south Mississippi couple expecting their second child, the documents indicate. Formaldehyde, a common wood preservative used in construction materials such as particle board, can cause vision and respiratory problems; long-term exposure has been linked to cancer and higher rates of asthma, bronchitis and allergies in children.

(Video Below)

The House Oversight & Government Reform Committee held hearings on this issue last week. This is a MUST SEE hearing. Rather than getting on top of this problem when they became aware of it, FEMA clearly tried to keep the situation quiet. It was the persistence of the Gulf Coast residents that brought this situation to light.

Be sure to watch the second panel which includes FEMA Chief David Paulison. Watch the exchanges between Paulison and the members of the Committee. The Committee members cut him no slack. The entire video is a must-see.

Paulison dissapointed me with this situation. I thought that he could be a good FEMA director, because he came from the career ranks.... (and he could still be a good director)...but it looks like he (or his management team) dropped the ball in this case. He may not be able to recover from this scandal.

It is clear that FEMA should be an independent agency with a Chief who holds the rank of Cabinet Secretary. The organization needs to be more efficient & effective, and it needs employees who are empowered to make decisions.

Another issue that this case shows is that the trailer contractors may have cut corners. Why are we hearing about toxicity in THESE trailers, and not with non-FEMA related trailers across the country? What was different about the manufacturing process with THESE units? Is it possible that the Contractors cut corners to save resources, & maximize profits? Why was there no mechanism to check for quality control and safety in the manufacturing process?

ALERT FOR BLACK BLOGOSPHERE - Help Fight BET

Below is a Press Release announcing an effort by WHATABOUTOURDAUGHTERS Blog Founder Gina McCauley & others, to fight BET's plan to air the show "Hot Ghetto Mess"...yet another BET Minstrel Program.

Mirror On America and the Angry Independent are behind this effort 110%

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Black Bloggers and Civil Rights Groups Unite to Topple BET's "Hot Ghetto Mess"

Austin, TX -July 19, 2007 - If Viacom's Black Entertainment Television goes through with it's plans to air " Hot Ghetto Mess" next week, many people will be watching, but not for the reason BET wants. Realizing that mere online advocacy was not going to be enough to topple "Hot Ghetto Mess" after she'd gotten advertisers to flee the show, Gina McCauley, creator of the blog What About Our Daughters? turned to a coalition of religious and women's groups including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, National Organization for Women, Rainbow PUSH, and the National Congress of Black Women.

" The message we want to send to advertisers is that "Hot Ghetto Mess" is radioactive. They don't want to come within one mile of it." McCauley said.

Transitioning from being a one-woman blog to working with long-established organizations has not been easy. "There's a reason why the only organization I belong to is AAA( the roadside assistance company)." In fact McCauley's dialogue with these groups began after she wrote a post on her blog criticizing their methods.

"I'm not going to lie and say I haven't been impatient with the pace
of their response," said McCauley. "As a blogger I move at warp
speed. I can respond instantaneously with one click. I don't have to have a committee debate what I am going to release to the world." While initially disappointed with the pace of the response to her request for assistance, her patience is finally beginning to pay off.

"Yes, to me, they move at glacial speed." McCauley says of the
organizations she's been working with "BUT, when they move- THEY MOVE!". Currently that glacier is aimed straight at Black Entertainment Television and Viacom.
