Robert Gates was quickly confirmed to be the next Secretary of Defense. During the confirmation hearings, Gates stated that the U.S. "was not winning the war in Iraq", and that a new course was needed.
He stated that he would examine the report from the Iraq Study Group (a group that he was a part of), but he did not commit to supporting all of the recommendations.
