For McCain, Self-Confidence on Ethics Poses Its Own Risk

WASHINGTON — Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

It had been just a decade since an official favor for a friend with regulatory problems had nearly ended Mr. McCain’s political career by ensnaring him in the Keating Five scandal. In the years that followed, he reinvented himself as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame.

But the concerns about Mr. McCain’s relationship with Ms. Iseman underscored an enduring paradox of his post-Keating career. Even as he has vowed to hold himself to the highest ethical standards, his confidence in his own integrity has sometimes seemed to blind him to potentially embarrassing conflicts of interest.

Methinks the Bible Thumpers won't like this.....AS IF they needed another reason to not like McCain.....and, somewhere...Mitt Romney is PISSED!

Wheeewwww!!!

You are quick on the draw Rikyrah.... QUICK I SAY!!!. :)

I just heard this one...and was contemplating when or whether to post.

But I see you don't mess around, lol.

They brought it on themselves with all of their nonsense about Michelle Obama. (among other things that they've been doing). And now they don't want to take their own medicine. Well too bad!!!

It looks like Ms. McCain has a Hell of a lot more to be concerned about than Michelle Obama's slightly different perception of America as a Black woman from a poor/working Class background.
And it looks like old John is offering more than just straight talk..... _________ __________ __________ ____________ ________.

You fill in the blanks.

The higher the pedestal.... the farther down they fall. My my my...

Unfortunately...The Republican & McCain allies in the mainstream corporate media will undoubtedly come to his aid and will work to keep a lid on this one.

Hmmm... this might not play well with those Conservatives and independents who McCain is attempting to sway.

Looking at that picture...It seems that the old guy has a thing for trophy Barbie blondes half his age.

The candy was so good to him that his handlers had to keep them seperated.

AI,

Can you imagine the phone call to Mitt Romney from one of his friends telling him to check his computer?

You know he's MAD AS HELL.

Exactly!!

All Mitt had to do was lay low for a few more days.

I bet he feels like the guy who didn't join the lotto pool at work, only to find out that they won $100 Million the next week. "I was THIS close to joining that lotto pool Miriam. THIS CLOSE".

Mitt has some explainin' to do.

Romney to supporters: "Uh... about that endorsement.... ya see, it all happened like this...."

But I don't think they are going to be in a conciliatory mood.
