Barack Obama's Grandmother is ill; he's leaving campaign trail

From The Washington Post.com:

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Democrat Barack Obama is cancelling nearly all his campaign events Thursday and Friday to fly to Hawaii to visit his suddenly ill 86-year-old grandmother.

Campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Monday that Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, who helped raise him, was released from the hospital late last week. But he says her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious.

Gibbs said Obama would return to the campaign trail on Saturday, though he was unsure where.

Obama events originally planned for Madison, Wis., and Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday will be replaced with one in Indianapolis before he makes the long flight to Hawaii.

Say some prayers.

I hope she will get well again..and that she will be able to see him win in November...and then be sworn in next year.

Dumb*** Rachel Maddow is framing this as a "big blow to the Obama campaign".

What? Let me get this straight... she believes that Obama taking a few days off to be with his ailing grandmother will cripple his campaign? If anything, it may boost Obama....(esp. since he has been labeled a monster over the last several weeks). I have a hard time believing that the people who planned to attend the few canceled rallies will all of a sudden vote for McCain because Obama needed to be with his grandmother. The whole premise is ridiculous. That paints folks as just robots. I think people have enough sense to understand Obama's situation...and if anything they will ADMIRE HIM EVEN MORE for it.

It will also provide folks with an opportunity to get to know Obama and his family more... to learn about his grandmother... How this could be framed as a negative is beyond me.

And Biden, Michelle, John Kerry and others are available to keep the campaign going strong.

I think Rachel may have had a lack of good material tonight...and needed to fill time.
