In Defense of Higher Education

In Sunday's Jackson Clarion-Ledger, I have a column in defense of the value of higher education. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Dr. King,

I agree with your commentary. President Obama echoed your message tonight.

For some reason... Republicans/Conservatives often don't see the collective national benefit of having an educated populace. (perhaps they like a more dumbed down citizenry so they can easily sell things like the War in Iraq...but I digress).

I don't know how they believe we'll collectively be able to compete 15, 20, 30 years down the road. It has to be a priority... even in tough economic times. In fact, it should become more important. People seek something to fall back on when their job security becomes an issue. That's probably why college applications and admissions tend to go up doing bad economic times.

I myself plan to return to school... because you need all the options you can get and you need to be able to stay on the playing field when there are more job seekers and when the competition for work goes up.
