The Story of Carmelo Rodriguez

(allow commercial to play)

Despite more and more of these stories coming to light in recent years (Walter Reed, Ft. Carson, etc.) the U.S. continues to cut corners when it comes to the care of its own soldiers. These kinds of stories seem to keep coming up.

I wish my Father was still around so that I could pick his brain. He was proud of the U.S. military...but he was also aware of the politics involved (both inside of the military, and from Washington DC). I just wonder if he would still feel the same after all of these stories.

I couldn't sleep last night. May God have mercy on us, because I don't know how the American People can ever redeem themselves in the eyes of the Rodriguez family. I just called my Senators and Congressman and urged them to do something about this case and the Feres Doctrine. Please consider doing the same.

I agree with Anonymous 1. This story SHOCKS THE CONSCIENCE and THAT ALONE should be enough to change the law. I would expect that there was a US REP on the porch of the Rodriguez family this morning with a nice OFFER. GREAT WORK CBS!!! GREAT WORK.

If you could not sleep last night, the Rodriguez family hasn't either. Thank you for calling the senators and congressman, it is the least the Rodriguez family can get from someone who has a great heart like yours. As I sat and watched the news about one of our Marines dying due to medical negligence, pain tighten my chest and tears just ran down my face. Then I heard FERES Doctrine! This is UNBELIEVABLE We the American people need to change this. Thank you CBS for getting this report out!

I ALSO AGREE WITH ANONYMOUS, ITS A SHAME THAT THIS HAD TO HAPPENd IN ORDER TO BRING IT INTO THE PUBLIC, LETS STOP WAR. IS THIS INCIDENT REALLY WORTH OUR FREEDOM, MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO HIS SON AND FAMILY. THE LAWS HAVE TO CHANGE, ITS NOT FAIR THAT HE HAD TO DIE THIS WAY. HE DESERVES JUSTICE AND WE THE PEOPLE ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN GIVE HIM THIS.

My mom had been watching the news and suddenly yelled oh my gosh, I ran out and said well what did they say. She rewind on the tivo so I could watch what she just did. When I saw the interview about Carmelo Rodriguez my heart sank into my stomach. How does someone sleep at night knowing that they did not tell him he had the most severe yet easiest treatable form of skin cancer. The fact that his family cannot receive justice is beyond me. It don't even know where to begin to think of how we can have senators and doctors like that in the world that can take advantage of their titles and positions and walk all over us. that family deserves JUSTICE includin his eight year old little boy.

My son Michael Fremer was killed at Fort Polk, La on 2/13/08 because of Army Negligence during a training exercise. The Army can not be held accountable because of the Feres Doctrine. This law needs to be changed. Why is the Army exempt from being held accountable for Negligence? Our young men and woman are risking their lives. This is how our country treats the soldiers and the families? The Feres Doctrine needs to be overturned!
There are other cases that involve the feres Doctrine. For example Medical Malpractice in the army. Also Marines being exposed to Toxic chemicals on US Bases. The Military is exempt from being held accountable on all of these matters.

Thank you so much for the support. This week we had our day in Congress, the bill HR 1478 (to overturn the Feres Doctrine) was heard. We've a website coming soon, www.stopferes.org is under construction, any data you have can be forwarded to eric.santiago@stopferes.org Thanks again to everyone for the support!!!

Thanks Eric...

I will definitely try to follow this issue closer to keep up with the Feres doctrine and what Congress is doing about it.

I was actually not aware of HR 1478.

Thanks again

The thought that thousands of men and women are willing to sacrifice themselves for out country, but that our country will do anything to relinquish themselves from sacrificing for them is disgraceful. Seeing this story really brought this into the eyes of the public and it is good to know that at least one congressman, my congressman in-fact, is doing something about such atrocities.

Words cannot express how deeply sorry I was to have heard the story that ended Carmelo's life. I cannot tell his family enough how many prayers I continue to say so that through the power of healing you might also be victorious in your fight. I went to school with Carmelo, my cousin dated him, he always made us laugh. This story will live on in my heart and mind and I will continue to pray. God bless to Carmelo's entire family and may he forever rest in peace and his story never be forgotten.
