One of the nation’s most conservative Christian leaders, the Rev. Ted Haggard, resigned yesterday as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and temporarily stepped aside as pastor of a Colorado mega-church after a self-described male escort accused him of paying for gay sex.
On November 2, 2006, Mike Jones, a male escort, alleged that Haggard, whom he knew as “Art”, paid for sex with him during trysts which had been taking place between them on an almost monthly basis over the course of the previous three years. Further, Jones said Haggard snorted methamphetamine before their sexual encounters to heighten his experience. KUSA-TV released voice mails, in which a person purportedly Haggard, said “Hey, I was just calling to see if we could get any more.
