Inauguration Day Open Thread
Lift Every Voice and Sing - the Negro National Anthem by James Weldon Johnson
This is the new cover of The Nation Magazine. Here is the DailyKos Diary by the artist. This day was long in coming in American History. And, Barack Hussein Obama was elected on the shoulders of many who paved the way. When I saw this cover, tears came to my eyes. I admit it, I never thought this day would happen in this country. How many people do you recognize on the cover?
Let's continue to share this historical day with one another.
Through the Front Door
I've quoted this Michelle Obama comment by Yogo numerous times during this election season, and it still rings true today as when I first read it.

I joke a lot about these two, but something sticks out at me about the whole campaign. especially after seeing this interview:
I like her. And not because of any strong this and that, she just seems genuine.
Is America ready for a First Lady who looks like her? A regular black woman? Not a passable biracial curly girl that they call black, but a regular black woman from the south side of Chicago? With dark skin?
Is she going to be the face of The Woman on the largest pedestal in the country? A self-confessed “loud-mouth” black woman?
If they succeed, it turns white supremacy upside down. And not, in my opinion, because a black man is in the White House, it’s because a black woman is in there. And she didn’t have to come in the back door to lie in bed with the president.
Alice Walker wrote in her endorsement of Barack Obama:
When I offered the word "Womanism" many years ago, it was to give us a tool to use, as feminist women of color, in times like these. These are the moments we can see clearly, and must honor devotedly, our singular path as women of color in the United States. We are not white women and this truth has been ground into us for centuries, often in brutal ways. But neither are we inclined to follow a black person, man or woman, unless they demonstrate considerable courage, intelligence, compassion and substance. I am delighted that so many women of color support Barack Obama -and genuinely proud of the many young and old white women and men who do.
Imagine, if he wins the presidency we will have not one but three black women in the White House; one tall, two somewhat shorter; none of them carrying the washing in and out of the back door.
Ms. Walker was incorrect. There won't be three Black women in the White House, but FOUR. Three generations- loving, teaching, learning, supporting.

Dr. King on how long it would take to get a Black President
From the BBC:

BBC World News America has unearthed a fascinating clip of Dr Martin Luther King speaking to the BBC's Bob McKenzie in 1964 in which Dr King predicts an African-American president "in less than 40 years".

A New Day?
Hopeful, but not optimistic cautiously optimistic. Because over the past 8 years (really 10 when you count the last 2 years of Clinton) this Country has been in one long continuous night. "Weeping may endure for a night.... " according to Psalms 30:5. But I guess in Biblical terms 10 years could be a night. It's time for something new.

Where Will Obama Rank Among This Group?
See my ranking of U.S. Presidents.
"Significant" or better I hope.
I now realize that I probably should have added another ranking... but it's too late to change it.
