Amy Winehouse - The New Queen of Soul?

The folks at Spin magazine might be on some serious mind altering drugs.
Now I have heard a few of her songs.... and...she's a pretty talented Pop Singer, and she has a good voice. But that's it. She is not the Queen of anything.... certainly not Soul. Give her a chance to make a few more albums before putting her that high up.
I don't read Spin... they publish quite a bit of nonsense, especially things that just aren't credible. As an amateur musicologist.... my bull---t alarm sounded immediately when I heard about this.
A few years ago I recall Spin magazine putting out a list of the 50 Greatest Bands of all-time... and there were some obvious omissions and oversights... Groups like NWA (a gangster rap group...and not even a "band") made the list, but Earth Wind & Fire, for example, was left off. Earth Wind & Fire is a Hall of Fame Band. That list blew my mind. And that was one of several problems with the list...several other major Rock bands were left off as well. So I don't pay much attention to these music mags.... But I thought their Queen of Soul Proclamation was amusing.

U.S. Missile Defense Plan Still On
Defense Secretary Robert Gates Says U.S. Missile Defense plans are still on despite Russian objections. NATO has also announced that it accepts the Missile Shield for Europe (they are the typical lackeys for the U.S.).
But Do the People of Poland and the Czech Republic Accept it? No. Why Can't The People of Poland and the Czech Republic Vote on the matter? Why is the U.S. against allowing the people of those two countries to have their say at the ballot box?
I think the EU and the U.S. are being hypocritical. The U.S. is constantly touting Democracy in places like Albania, Georgia and the Ukraine....but then it turns around and prevents European citizens from having their say about a U.S. missile system being installed on their land. If this were allowed to go to a vote in these two countries, the plan would be soundly defeated....and European "leaders" know it.
I guess the same lack of Democracy that Americans experience here at home is being exported to Europe in this case.
Now we even have the N. Koreans responding to this missile defense plan.... Which could have a negative impact on the negotiations with that country. Negotiations have been held up by a "glitch" regarding the U.S. holding up its end of the deal.... unfreezing N. Korean funds. Everytime there is a breakthrough or near breakthrough in the N. Korea negotiations...there is always this convenient last minute "glitch" that pops up. I have written many times that the U.S. may not really want a negotiated solution regarding N. Korea. This would explain why the U.S. keeps sabotaging the "diplomacy".

Civil War In Palestine & A Roundup of the Weeks Events
I hinted several months ago that Palestine was headed for a Civil War between Hamas and Fatah, the two major factions now battling for political & military control. Hamas and Fatah now seem to be engaged in all out civil war... The two sides have been engaging in heavy battles in Gaza over the past two weeks, and it finally ended with Hamas militants routing Fatah. However Fatah and the Palestinian authority remain in control in the much larger West Bank. This is more bad news for Palestine, and reduces any hope for any kind of viable Palestinian State. It also raises the risk of a regional conflict. Any attacks on Israel from Gaza will be blamed on Syria and/or Iran as these two countries are seen by the West as being the main supporters and suppliers of the radical Hamas movement. This could lead to a wider conflict in the future.
The Palestinians are now split between President Abbas & his Fatah faction (seen by many as moderates) and the more Jihadist Hamas. Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, can expect more poverty and suffering under Hamas, due to sanctions. Hamas has set itself up for a big failure... because they must now deliver. They won't be able to do that without working with Abbas and Fatah, because President Abbas still controls the purse strings. But I don't think that they are really concerned about delivering for the people. That idea assumes that Hamas will honor democratic principles. It seems to me that they would be willing to rule by dictatorship and force their own brand of fundamentalism onto the Palestinian people. They might try it at least... but I am not so sure that the Palestinian people will go for that. But Hamas will be in no hurry to return control back to the legitimate internationally recognized Palestinian Authority. In fact, I think they may try to hold on to power for a long time and may not be willing to honor elections. But only time will tell for sure.

It also looks bad for the Palestinians because they are killing their own people. In doing so, it brings the whole Palestinian struggle into question. How can you call for peace, and expect the World to respect your cause when you are killing your own? That went through my head almost immediately when the new fighting began to flare up. It doesn't look good to the rest of the world, a world in which Palestine relies on for about half of its funding. With Hamas controlling Gaza, the region will continue to be a source of Islamic radicalism for the entire world, just as it has been for the last 40+ years.
But I think (and hope) Hamas' power will not extend beyond the Gaza strip.
Another strange twist to all of this is that you could actually see cooperation between Israel and Abbas.... as Israel will be interested in keeping the moderates in control.
But prepare for more ruthless attacks in Gaza by Israel (perhaps even with a wink and a nod from Fatah). The U.S. has already been funding and supplying one side in this civil war.... which is reminiscent of the proxy wars of the Cold War.... in this case it is a proxy war between the U.S. and Syria/Iran. Yet another civil war where the U.S. has been behind a lot of the wickedness from the beginning..... just like in Iraq. Part of the problems in Palestine stemmed from U.S. (and Israels) attempts to weaken the Palestinian authority. By sabotaging the Palestinian Authority, the U.S. unwittingly helped to popularize Hamas.... basically making it easy for them to gain a strong political foothold that they continue to have today. That's been one of the problems with arrogant, ignorant U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. doesn't understand the cultures, the people, the land, the religion, or the politics of the countries that it wants to bully. It's hard to defeat your enemies when you don't understand them. This is what led to the disaster in Iraq to a large degree. A lack of understanding of the people, the cultures, etc of other nations. Now the U.S. finds itself in one of the biggest fiasco's that it has ever been in. And now the maniacs in the White House are setting the stage for Iraq to become Supersized so to speak. Not satisfied with the disaster that they already have, the neo-conservatives seem to be on a path to spread the disaster to other parts of the Middle East. Iran is a top candidate.

But I am just as afraid that Pakistan may be next, with all of the internal problems there (a potentially unprecedented nightmare for obvious reasons). I have been trying not to think about a coup where Pervez Musharraf is taken out and radicals take control. But I have had nightmares about it.

Judge orders Libby jailed during appeal
Scooter Libby has been ordered to jail during his appeal.
Libby's attorneys asked that the order be stayed, but U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton denied the request and told Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff that he has 10 days to appeal the ruling.
Do you think that the THREATS he's been receiving had anything to do with the judge's decision?
You chose to lie Scooter. Deal with the consequences of your actions.

The Death Of Edith Rodriguez: A Despicable Tragedy
I am becoming more convinced that the U.S. is losing whatever heart and soul that it may have had. It seems as if the social fabric that built this nation is coming apart. I know that the U.S. position in the world as a great super-power is beginning to wane.... but have we become a third world nation already? I guess the inner-cities across the country have always had these third world problems, but the story of Edith Rodriguez just blew my mind.... With all that I have seen in this life (which has been a lot).... perhaps I should not be surprised, but this story is just mind boggling.
Those who have been paying attention to the healthcare situation understand that the U.S. health system is in crisis. It has been in a slow motion dive for a long time. From time to time we hear about some crazy story about a long wait in an ER, or how low income communities are being underserved. But no case collectively personifies these problems better than the case of Edith Rodriguez, and her experience at the "Historically Black" MLK hospital in Los Angeles- a Public Hospital responsible for serving low income residents. MLK has a history of problems with service and quality. The reputation of this facility is so bad that it is sometimes referred to as the hospital where people check in.... but don't check out.
Edith's last day on earth was literally Hell. The nightmare started some days earlier...when she went to MLK with stomach symptoms but was sent home .... and she was later sent home at least one other time...before her final day.
On May 9th, 2007 she went to the ER because the same symptoms had gotten considerably worse. Despite obviously needing immediate treatment.... the staff of MLK Hospital refused to help her. She would eventually collapse on the floor of the ER....but the staff still refused to help.
When she began vomiting blood all over the floor.... she STILL received no help from the hospital staff... A member of her family eventually had to dial 911 to see if an ambulance could respond to take her to a real hospital, but the caller was met with indifference. A few minutes later, another patient made a call to 911, but she too was met with indifference....and not only that....the 911 operator was down right rude and ignorant to the caller....telling the caller (in so many words) that she had no business making the call and that her call was not an emergency.
See Story and Video From ABC News (video in top right corner).
The nightmare didn't end there.... Mrs. Rodriguez continued to vomit blood....and scream in pain.... obviously needing immediate care, but the staff continued to stand by and watch as Janitors quietly mopped up the mess around her. This went on for nearly an hour.
But the final insult came when the family summoned police to the scene. But instead of getting help for the dying woman.... the meatheads from the Police Department arrested Rodriguez (obviously a critical patient at this point) on a warrant. She died as they were wheeling her out of the ER.
This case exposes the sick underside of America.... and it highlights trouble in so many different areas...that I don't know where to start with this.
The first thing that comes to mind is.... if this hospital was this bad all of this time, why was it allowed to remain open? Because the patients were mostly poor and black? Did that make it acceptable for so long? It seems to me that something should have been done about this facility a long time ago.
It also shows a complete breakdown in basic health services. This collapse has been in progress for years..... in slow motion. But now the situation is really beginning to take a toll. It's not just poor people anymore. I visited the ER of a suburban hospital in St. Louis a few years ago (a hospital considered to be pretty good) and I waited for 3 hours before I was seen by anyone.
The public hospitals that serve the inner-cities are much worse and have been dealing with problems of poor funding, low salaries, incompetence, understaffing, low morale and other problems for years.
Edith Rodriguez didn't just pass away on May 9th...she was killed. And hopefully she didn't die in vain. Perhaps some positive changes will come out of this story....and I could go on and on about all of the problems in American society and in healthcare that were highlighted in this case... (a sick police culture of indifference to poor people, police tunnel-vision, poor emergency preparedness, inadequate healthcare for the poor and for all Americans, the lack of nurses and good doctors and hospitals, the need for more laws to protect citizens from State sponsored killings like this one, etc)... But this should be another wake up call to America...telling America to get its priorities in order. Any country that doesn't invest in its people is bound to fail from the inside out. Will America finally heed the wake up call? And how many more wake up calls do we need? I'm not too optimistic. I don't know what it will finally take to get this country to wake up from its coma.

C-4 & Other Explosives Stolen From Police Range
A Large Amount of Explosives Have Been Stolen From A Police Storage Bunker at a Training Facility in Suburban St. Louis.
The facility was used by the FBI and the St. Charles County Sheriffs Department
Explosives capable of causing "extensive damage" have been stolen from a St. Charles County firing range used by the sheriff's office and the FBI, federal officials said Tuesday.
Officials are still trying to determine how much dynamite, C-4 and other explosives were taken and exactly who was responsible.
Mike Schmitz of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said investigators believe more than one person was involved in the theft, but it is too early to know the intent of the thieves, including whether terrorism could be involved.
The theft, discovered by the FBI on Tuesday, happened sometime in the past 10 days.
The explosives, including C-4, dynamite and safety fuse, were being stored at the St. Charles County training center and firearms range at 1835 South Highway 94, Schmitz said. The range is located in a rural area.
They were stored properly in the federally approved storage magazine, which resembles a large construction Dumpster, Schmitz said.
The metal explosives magazine where the materials were stored is used by the FBI and the sheriff's office for training and for rendering other explosives or suspected explosives safe, Schmitz said.
"These items are all extremely dangerous," Schmitz said.
Dynamite is a nitroglycerin-based high explosive. C-4 is a military-grade plastic explosive, more powerful than TNT, that has been used by al-Qaida and other terrorist groups.
C-4 was the explosive used in the destroyer Cole attack in 2000, a suicide bombing that killed 17 sailors and wounded dozens of others while the ship was in a Yemeni port. Terrorists used it in 1996 to blow up an American military housing complex in Saudi Arabia, killing 19 Air Force servicemen. Hundreds were injured.
It was also the substance in the shoe of attempted shoe bomber Richard Reid, convicted of trying to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight a few months after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Investigators said they are taking the theft seriously.
"Anytime any explosives are in the hands of the wrong people, we're concerned about it, and were working closely with all area law enforcement to try and locate the stuff," said FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Tom Noble. "Obviously, we take this very seriously."
Investigators were still at the site Tuesday evening.
Noble said that the thief or thieves somehow got past the locks. Another storage building was not touched, Schmitz said. The sheriff's office referred calls to the ATF.

Major Immigration Raid in Portland
But once again, the employers avoid arrest!
“only 48 of nearly 600 workers at the plant had valid Social Security numbers”.
A major produce plant in Portland Oregon was raided by ICE agents targeting illegal immigrant workers. But I saw no CEO's, no HR Management or any other management from the company being hauled away in handcuffs.
When will this government get serious about enforcing the law, protecting the borders....and targeting everyone involved in this nonsense, including the fat cat CEO's? I am tired of seeing only poor folks being taken away after one of these raids (which seem to be intended for the American viewing audience...to give the impression that Bush & Co. is on the case).
The immigration issue cannot be dealt with in any serious way until and unless the Federal government starts punishing the employers who use (and attract) illegal immigration and who are benefiting from the extra profits that come from using illegal labor.
