The First Lady's Overseas Trip to South Africa: She finally makes it to Capetown

The First Lady continued her trip in South Africa. She visited the Vhuthilo Community Center in Soweto township, Johannesburg , and its community garden. Then, she made it to Capetown and the District Six museum, in Cape Town, South Africa.

The First Lady and First Daughters Continue Their Visit to South Africa
hat tips-The Obama Diary,3CHICSPOLITICO:
The First Lady continues her trip in South Africa.

The First Lady continues her trip in South Africa.
US First Lady meets Mandela
US First Lady Michelle Obama met South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela at his home Tuesday, in a rare visit with the ageing icon whose legacy frames much of her journey here.
The meeting with the 92-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner was discreetly arranged after Obama and her daughters visited archives chronicling some of his 27 years as a political prisoner.
At the Mandela Foundation, his wife Graca Machel guided Obama, her mother, and her daughters Malia and Sasha through an exhibit of his personal photographs and journals, in which he meticulously drafted letters but also kept more mundane notes on his weight and daily routine.
“After leaving here, she proceeded to make a brief courtesy call on former president Mandela,” said Achmat Dangor, the head of the foundation, calling the first lady “a lovely woman without any airs”.
Their visit added to the symbolism surrounding Obama's journey, with America's first black family in the White House meeting South Africa's first black president.

The president said all he wants for Christmas is hugs from his daughters, but Sasha and Malia have other plans. During a Q&A with kids at the Children's National Medical Center on Tuesday, the girls revealed they're getting their father "sports stuff." They also talked about how Christmas will be different now that they're in the White House and what they're planning for the holidays.
Bo the dog came along for the visit. The pool report by Kevin Chappell of Ebony Magazine recounted:As [Michelle Obama] began reading, Bo spotted Santa on the podium behind Sasha and Malia, and began to bark loudly.
"Quiet Bo," FLOTUS said.
But Bo kept barking at Santa, prompting Santa to retreat off to one side of the podium. Seconds later, Santa appeared on the other side of the podium. Bo seemed to be fine with that.

Michelle Obama to Russia, Ghana, Italy, Will Meet Pope Benedict
Posted: 07/2/09
Filed Under:The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet
First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia, along with her mother, Marian Robinson, will join President Obama when he travels to Russia, Italy and Ghana next week. The First Couple will meet with Pope Benedict XVI on July 10 at the Vatican.
The White House announced in May that Mrs. Obama would visit Ghana -- and only recently confirmed that she will be with the president for the entire swing. The president will deliver two major speeches during the trip -- in Moscow, on U.S.-Russia relations, and in Accra, before the Ghanaian parliament.
Not all details about Mrs. Obama's activities on this trip are out yet, but a Wednesday briefing at the White House revealed some of her plans.
This is Mrs. Obama's second overseas trip in less than a month; she, her mom and daughters flew to Paris and London in June, marking Sasha's eighth birthday in London. Malia turns 11 on July 4. The next day, the Obama family flies to Russia aboard Air Force One, landing in Moscow on Monday.
Unlike the Paris and London trip -- basically a vacation for Mrs. Obama, with the exception of a side visit to Normandy to mark the anniversary of D-Day -- this travel is official business.

Why Black Bloggers Speak Up
Hat tip: The Black Snob
From Newsweek
Here are some of the articles criticizing HuffingtonPost.com from What About Our Daughters and Michelle Obama Watch:
Chicanery and Foolishness: Huffington Post Calls Sasha Obama “SASSY”
Updated)Huffington Post Takes Another Swipe at Sasha Obama- Why doe Sasha Scare Arianna?
January 23rd, 2009
Why don't you call out Michelle Obama Watch and What About Our Daughters by name, Ms. Kelley? Instead of snidely writing about them in the anonymous sense, why didn't you bother to call up Gina McCauley at What About Our Daughters and have a DIALOGUE with her on WHY she believed labeling a seven-year-old Sasha Obama ' Sassy', could be seen as a slippery slope to pigeonholing this child with the straightjackets and boxes that they have been trying to place her 45 year old Black mother in since the beginning of this campaign? But, you absolve HuffingtonPost, and deride What About Our Daughters and Michelle Obama Watch. Even after being written to, and explained the context of what's wrong with labeling Sasha Obama like that, HuffingtonPost continued to do so. I'm glad WAOD and MOW haven't backed down. Haven't backed away. I have appreciated a blog like What About Our Daughters, because in reading it, over time, you see that nothing is in isolation. The images, and consequences of the images of Black girls and Black Women have real life consequences, from employment, to treatment within the law, to how we live our everyday lives. I am thankful that there are blogs like WAOD, Field Negro, Skeptical Brotha, Pam's House Blend, that speak to the concerns of African-Americans -unfiltered and honest. And, why when they see something that offends them, even in the so-called ' liberal' media, they call it out.

No Apologies
We're all worried about seeming racist. Some advice: just relax.
By Raina Kelley | NEWSWEEK

From the magazine issue dated Mar 9, 2009
Dear fellow journalists (especially the ones on TV): can I offer you a bit of unsolicited advice? Be brave. Listening to you talk (and talk and talk) around the subject of Barack Obama and race has been downright painful. Yes, our new president is black, and most of you are white, and judging by the way you excruciatingly measure every word you say about him, it's pretty clear that you are worried that you'll inadvertently say something insensitive and you'll wind up being accused of racism and it will ruin your career. I understand your fear. But seriously, it makes for some pretty painful watching.
An example: presidents dance at inaugural balls; that's what they do. Yes, it's a racial stereotype that all black people have rhythm. It is not racist to say that Barack and Michelle Obama looked good dancing together. Trust me on this.
I know there are plenty of Internet sheriffs trolling the airwaves for the next Imus-style outrage. Ignore them. Of course, if you send an e-mail cartoon depicting the front lawn of the White House as a watermelon patch, as the mayor of Los Alamitos, Calif., did last week, you're on your own. But there is simply nothing racist about saying that adorable little Sasha Obama is "sassy." The Huffington Post got clobbered for pointing out a "sassy" pair of sunglasses the president's daughter was sporting. You know, cute, sporty, fresh. If we're all sounding the alarm for that kind of thing, it's going to be a long four (possibly eight) years. I don't remember any indignation when the Huffington Post ran a story about Sarah Palin's daughter called "Piper's Sassiest Moments."

Dear Confused White People, Malia and Sasha Obama are NOT 'bi-racial'.
I'm reading in the comments, and I see this discussion going on.
Yeah, when did this happen?
This reply was given by our ever astute Town:
Town, always comes around to the point of things.
I was reading Jezebel earlier and they were talking about the Obama girls and I notice this on other sites as well and want to ask a question. Since when are the Obama girls "biracial"? When did this happen?
Yeah, when did this happen?
This reply was given by our ever astute Town:
I think "biracial" is being pushed around by white people to divorce their non-white offspring/non-white person they like from the "undesirable" minority group they came from.
That's why it confuses many whites when Obama willingly, conciously CHOOSES to self-identify as black, marry a black woman and have two black kids. Why would he do that, they wonder?
I think the "biracial" movement is being pushed by whites who don't want their offspring stigmatized and by those non-whites who don't want to be stigmatized.
By calling the Obama girls "biracial" they are totally erasing Michelle from the mix. Which I guess is the point, huh?
Town, always comes around to the point of things.
