Powell didn't overreact. I could feel my blood pressure rise as I watched it. I'm glad she's getting nailed to the wall for it.rikyrahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10982657053583534299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21083673.post-31382278068802284522008-10-21T15:16:00.000-07:002008-10-21T15:16:00.000-07:00Anonymous,Thanks for the comment.I am really not t...Anonymous,

Thanks for the comment.

I am really not too crazy about that rhetoric either. Maybe you didn't notice my earlier nuanced comment.
I have never been too crazy about it. But the blog editor/contributor is free to give her opinion.... actually Rikyrah was providing the reactions to the Powell story from several other blogs and sources... and the "Patio Negro" and the "Black Card" narratives originated on those sites. But we are free to comment on them.

The Field Negro uses that narrative to spark discussions about race. That's his way of injecting humor.... How literally he or his readers believes the metaphor? We don't really know... but I don't think it's taken too literally. The Field Negro is actually a pretty sharp Philly attorney (not a bonehead)....although I don't always agree with how he frames his discussions. In fact, the first time that I read his use of Field Negro/House Negro/Patio Negro... I criticized it, and made some of the same comments that you have made here (and a few other readers have criticized FN for this kind of commentary).

As for Powell being responsible for the Iraq debacle... I agree, he is still responsible for the part he played creating suffering for the people there. I've always said that.
Although we don't know and may never know exactly what he knew and when he knew it...in terms of the big lie. Perhaps he knew more than we think... History will judge him...and he has to sleep at night with that weight on his conscience.

But the Obama endorsement showed his independence and willingness to break from the Bush Administration and the Neo Conservatives who control his Party. By taking a big step and showing his independence he may have at least started the process of repairing his damaged image.Brian https://www.blogger.com/profile/07872444863142531165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21083673.post-84696989131592705692008-10-21T10:10:00.000-07:002008-10-21T10:10:00.000-07:00Sorry folks, but the "black card" and "patio negro...Sorry folks, but the "black card" and "patio negro, house negro" and the rest of that kind of talk is pure bullshit.

I will get down on my knees and thank god (you can call me an agnostic) the very day we stop looking at ourselves and the world through the paradigm of the old south and racist whites today.

I still hold Colin coupable for the murder of 4,000 plus men and women and countless Iraqis whether he eats grits or rice. Whether he golfs w/ his white friends or hoops w/ the fellas on the weekends. Whether he listens to the roots or harry conick jr. To hear this kind of talk on this blog is disappointing to say the least.

When will we stop eating the fruit of the poisonous tree?

Sorry yall, I just think its time to look up from the "house negro, field negro" divisive rhetoric that keeps us apart. While I absolutely love the intellectual workings of most posters, and certainly the contributors of this blog, it still saddens me that when I still here that rhetoric. Again, no offense, right or wrong, that's just how I see it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21083673.post-78204775973500978342008-10-20T19:51:00.000-07:002008-10-20T19:51:00.000-07:00Here is some info about the now famous Buffalo Sol...Here is some info about the now famous Buffalo Soldiers Memorial (of which Powell Founded).

Copy and paste

http://brownvboard.org/brwnqurt/01-1/01-1e.htm

The event that i'm thinking of was some sort of speech concerning the location of the memorial, and there was some other event as well... All I can remember was that it was 1985 or 86...and he spoke and met with the soldiers (one of those soldiers being my step-mother).

The actual dedication ceremony came later...and he spoke for that too.Brian https://www.blogger.com/profile/07872444863142531165noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21083673.post-72870482191334438412008-10-20T19:17:00.000-07:002008-10-20T19:17:00.000-07:00Oh, I agree with you....Powell never returned his ...Oh, I agree with you....Powell never returned his Black Card.

Now, Uncle Clarence.....nope...Black card revoked.rikyrahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10982657053583534299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21083673.post-53271067176913462782008-10-20T17:32:00.000-07:002008-10-20T17:32:00.000-07:00He never lost his so-called "Black Card". It's ok ...He never lost his so-called "Black Card". It's ok to be Black and a moderate Conservative. What he lost (and may have gained back) was his integrity, respect and credibility.

Powell hasn't been shy to Black causes (despite what folks might think). Although it made me sick to see how he carried the water for Bush the puppet and the Neo-Conservatives who have almost destoyed the country. I first heard about Powell about 21 or 22 years ago when I was a teenager in Leavenworth Kansas. My step-mother got to meet him and hear him speak when he came to Fort Leavenworth for the dedication of a Black soldiers memorial. I can still recall her coming home from work that day and telling me how impressed she was... I believe he was just a 3 star General back then. Of course the World got to know him a few years later during the Gulf War when he was Chair of the Joint Chiefs I believe.

The latest war in Iraq really tarnished him quite a bit. As a General of his stature...and later as Sec. of State... integrity and credibility becomes everything... even more when you're a Black American. And I think he felt that the neocons took some of that away from him.

And what else could you expect from the bigots on TV and Talk Radio? They are going to write Powell's decision off as race-based when they know there are a million other reasons to vote against McCain and the Republicans (even the pundits themselves know this). But they want to ease the pain of their fall from grace by making things up... they want to create other reasons in their minds and in the minds of viewers for why folks are jumping from the sinking 'Strait Talk Titanic Express'. It's too much for them to remind themselves of all the other reasons to vote against McCain. I think THIS TIME... folks (on the whole) will see right through that nonsense. THIS TIME. Americans may go back to being zombies and functional illiterates in a few years...(like they usually are)... this election... they are paying closer attention than anytime since the 60's.

Did Field break out the Patio Knee Grow again (lol). I haven't been over there in a couple of days... i'll have to check it out. Powell has been demoted my Mr. Charlie, lol. Sad thing is... it's probably true. There won't be anymore invitations to big GOP functions for him after this... he's locked out. Then again... I think they demoted Powell a long time ago. At least the insiders did... The only difference now might be that the Conservative pundits (the propaganda wing of the Party) are catching up and are slamming him publicly.Brian https://www.blogger.com/profile/07872444863142531165noreply@blogger.com
